
The
James F. Byrnes Foundation Scholarships are living memorials to the memory
of James Francis Byrnes and his wife, Maude Busch Byrnes, two of South
Carolina's outstanding citizens of their times.
The Byrnes Scholars now have an email list to keep Scholars and Friends of The James F. Byrnes Foundation informed of pertinent information as it occurs.
Membership to this list serve is by subscription only. Members may send messages to the list to be forwarded to members of the list.
Messages and information that are not about the Byrnes family specifically will not be forwarded. Information including, but not limited to, jokes, political statements and opinions, and messages that contain obviously objectionable content (racial, sexual, religious, etc.) will not be allowed.
The Byrnes Scholars Board will host the 45th annual James F. Byrnes Scholars Awards Luncheon on Saturday, June 14, at the Clarion Town House Hotel at 1615 Gervais Street in Columbia. The luncheon welcomes the 2008 James F. Byrnes Scholars and honors graduating Seniors.
Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., with lunch served at noon in the Palmetto Ballroom. Cost is $18 per person; current Scholars attend free of charge and 2008 Scholars and one guest attend free of charge.
A casual social will be held Friday, June 13, at Damon’s Grill in the Vista at 900 Senate Street at 6:00 p.m. 2008 Scholars and one guest attend for free with all others attending as Dutch Treat and ordering from the menu.
The 2008 luncheon speaker is 2004 Scholar Tyler Gailey with a presentation on the James F. Byrnes Room in the Cooper Library at Clemson University. Ward Buzzell, a 1953 Clemson University alumnus, will join Tyler to review the 2007 James F. Byrnes Room renovations and rededication.
The James F. Byrnes Room is located on the fourth floor of Cooper Library and contains many of Byrnes papers and mementos.
The Jake Salley Alumni Service Award also will be presented. Each year this award is presented to a Scholar whose life and contributions reflect those of Jake Salley – a loyal Byrnes Scholar, a devoted family man, and an inspiring educator who gave untiringly of himself to the Byrnes Foundation and to others until his untimely death in 1979.
A brief business meeting will follow at the conclusion of the luncheon to elect new officers to the Byrnes ScholarsThe information concerning Byrnes Scholarships and The Byrnes Foundation is taken from materials developed by The Byrnes Foundation, especially the 1988 index to The James F.
